Both mothers and fathers of the performers who meet on stage this evening already cleaned up the mess from the dead corners of the institutional power structures. They served hors d‘oeuvres at premiere parties without a sound, took over the maintenance of sports cars whose value exceeded their annual salary many times over, and so on. The lives of the second generation also take place outside the gaze of the dominant society and they too are condemned to dirty work.
In her third HAU co-production, Nuray Demir, together with Minh Duc Pham, shows how this generation, too, uses the aggressive all-purpose cleaners of cultural studies to make the white cube shine and disposes of the toxic waste from the theatres without protective suits or union organisation. In order to make understandable how stubbornly ideological debris settles in institutions, they present semiotics of dirty work.
