Among many reasons, industrialisation and migration fractured historical labour hereditary pathways, allowing (or forcing) individuals to craft their own labour-ancestries. Today, while echoes of the past remain, professional identity is shaped more and more by personal choice, ambitions and/or socio-economic circumstance.

Yet, in forging new careers, individuals not only create their own occupational heritages, passing down knowledge and aspirations to new colleagues, but decide on what occupational lineages, heritages and traditions they want to ascribe themselves to.This shift transforms the notion of labour-ancestry from a fixed family destiny into an evolving narrative of self-determined legacies.Through this lens, labour is no longer merely a function of ancestry – it becomes a generational story of reinvention and continuity within chosen lineages.
